Typhoon Maysak, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Chedeng, is currently a typhoon approaching the Philippines, which recently affected Yap and Chuuk State in the Federated States of Micronesia. It was recently an unusually powerful tropical cyclone, only the third known tropical cyclone in the northwest Pacific ocean to have attained such intensity in March, the previous one being Mitag in 2002. While at peak intensity, the typhoon gained significant attention on social media when American astronaut Terry Virts shared a photo of the system’s eye he captured from the International Space Station (ISS) on Twitter. He described the eye as “a black hole from a science fiction movie.” European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti also tweeted an image of the storm, with the caption “Commands respect even from #space.
